Facts About Sea Turtles

  • Sea turtles are considered free-range parents who leave their offspring to fend for themselves right from the start. Mother turtles prepare for their young by choosing a good nesting site, carefully building the nest, and hiding the burrow.
  • Once they hatch, baby sea turtles must race to the ocean, often at night to avoid predators. The moonlight guides them to the water.
  • Once a baby sea turtle enters the water, its whereabouts will be unknown for as long as a decade! This period is called the "Lost Years." When they grow larger, they return to swimming in coastal areas.
  • Sea turtles can live up to 100 years!
